Supporting Migratory Justice

We firmly believe that no human being is illegal. Our binational team is deeply concerned about current U.S. immigration policy and the slow dismantling of the asylum system alongside the expansion of ICE. One of our intentions this year was to increase our support for migrants whose lives have been unjustly torn apart by cruel policies and unethical treatment.

Through legal assistance and advocacy, The Rhizome Center helps people affected by deportation rebuild their lives by restoring justice in a harsh system where there is often no accountability.

Among the deported are U.S. citizens caught in the middle. Forced to leave the United States to keep their families intact, they too are arriving in Mexico, in cities like Guadalajara, where they face their own hardships, including being unable to attend school or access public services.

This year's $5,000 USD donation to The Rhizome Center supports those facing deportation, and their families, with direct humanitarian and legal assistance to reunite families and communities and restore their rights, whether in Mexico or the United States.

While the millions who have been deported to Mexico represent the harsh effect of exclusionary U.S. policies, that has not stopped hundreds of thousands of migrants from heading north every year, many of them through the city of Guadalajara.

"In a city that is increasingly important for the transit and settlement of migrants, we thank Calo for standing in solidarity with our cause and with everyone who suffers the harsh impacts of U.S. immigration laws and policies," shared Founder and Executive Director Tran Dang.

This year, Calo has supported several organizations through financial donations and pro bono work, including Foster Source, Cancer Hope Network, Chaffee County Family & Youth Initiatives, Love Light Hope Yoga & Meditation, and NHSTC.
